Some cellar doors are like restaurants on the waterfront of the Sydney harbour by the Opera House, prime real estate, can’t be missed and just about everyone knows’ about them. Sometimes though, the fun is in the finding, like the little bars in the lane ways of Melbourne. To get off the beaten track and be the first to come across that yet to be discovered hidden gem can be the thing that sets you apart from your know it all foodie friends. If that sounds like you then “YOU…HAVE…TO…VISIT…SOUMAH.” (Pretend I was yelling to you from the top of mountain slowly, to get the full impact.)
The pretty drive is only minutes away from the Maroondah Hwy turn off yet you feel as though you are in an undiscovered part of the Yarra Valley. This great little cellar door has a lot to offer and it begins with the warm greeting as soon as we step inside. Soumah grabs its inspiration from Northern Italy and it’s easy to imagine the cellar door with its deep blue tiles as a modern Italian country cottage. The wine list is a mix of Italian wine styles as well as the Eastern French varieties.
From there things just get better with the help of a very good Viognier with hints of apricot, a nicely oaked Chardonnay and a Rosé made from the Pinot grape. The reds were just as excellent and we finished off with a Brachetto, an Italian grape variety that I have not heard of before, and made into a wicked luscious pink dessert wine. A small but well thought out menu of Italian peasant food is perfect and completes the picture.
I have just four words for you. “Trust me, go visit”

Ok I’m intrigued – will be seeking this one out just to try the Brachetto.
