Armstead Estate

Cosy cellar door that is run by a husband and wife team. The very hospitable and chatty wife mans the cellar door with an open fireplace that cranks up the heat in the cooler months while the husband, Peter, tenders the vines and did on this occasion come in for a chat with us but only if his wife lets him get a word in.
The old foreman’s cottage has been converted into the tasting room and steps out onto the lawns that lead straight to the banks of Lake Eppalock. I was told that it was not unusual for boats to pull up and people come in for a tasting or even enjoy a bottle of one of their wines and have a picnic on the lawns. (Which is greatly encouraged by the owners.) Only a small selection of wines starting with a Marsanne, then we tried two different vintages of the Roxy’s Paddock Shiraz, both of which were excellent. A very classy Sparkling Shiraz rounded off the tasting. A great place to get some good old fashion country hospitality, with some nice views of Lake Eppalock and some open space for the kids to run around. A little distance north from the township Heathcote but well worth the visit.
