As can be the case with many family run wineries the person who pours your wine often has a vital role in running the winery, weather it be the chief winemaker or some other interesting character that has immense knowledge on all things wine related. In this instance, it was the patriarch of the family and of Best’s winery, Viv Thomson who took us through our wine tasting.
Viv is highly regarded within the wine industry but he was a true gentleman talking about and explaining their wines to us and made sure that anyone who was interested in wine, no matter what level of experience was made to feel welcomed. On our last visit we had a charming Irish lass look after us. She had the vitality and humour you would typically expect from any Irishman. But she was more than a fun gal. Her knowledge on wines was excellent she listened to people and this lethal combination made her a host that any winery cellar door would die to have as their cellar door assistant.
With so many wines already in our own private cellar more wine is the last thing we needed, but we couldn’t resist taking home a couple of bottles of their excellent reds and two different Rieslings .
A self-guided tour of the historic 1860’s underground cellar is a must for all visitors.
