Some places keep an eagle eye on exactly how much wine they pour in your glass, some barely enough to get a proper taste. Whereas at Cofield they treat you like a friend that matters with a good pour of the wine into your glass so that you get a chance to really appreciate the wine. Enough to smell the wine properly and enough to go back for a second or third taste if you need. Our tasting began with a very elegant, crisp clean Sparkling that would be perfect for a day at the races followed by a Sparkling Shiraz and a perfect summer drink in a Sparkling Sarah that glowed a wonderful light pink hue and made from the Frontignac grape. Think Moscato but not as sweet and with more fizz. A good size wine list with some highlights being a ripper Sangiovese, the Footprint Shiraz and the Port and Muscat.
Our host was all you would hope he would be, friendly chatty and knowledgeable making the wine tasting a full blown experience. A wood fired heater added warmth to what was a miserable day outside and a stack of pencils keep little fingers occupied. Outside a super sized chess set is available for use next to picnic tables and umbrellas. Next door the ever-popular restaurant is always busy so if you are thinking of dinning think of booking.

Another of our favourites in the Rutherglen region, Cofields has a great cellar door and wonderful (ie busy) restaurant. Both are highly recommended. We find the cellar door staff to be very knowledgeable and passionate about their wines. The have some great specials on clean skins. A good selection of wines, with something that will please everyone.

Situated not far from the town of Rutherglen and conveniently right next to Pickled Sisters Cafe, Cofield was a great winery to spend some time in. The staff were super friendly, taking time to explain the wines on offer and also the history of wines like the Durif that is one of the region’s specialties. Loved all their wines, particularly the Sparkling Shiraz, Rousanne Marsanne and aforementioned Durif.
