Since our last visit a new, modern and classy tasting room has been built separate to the restaurant. The interior has the feel of a smart café with tables scattered around the room, an adjoining tasting room for larger groups and bi-fold doors that open to a courtyard.
With a new cellar door comes a new approach to how Crittenden Estate conduct their wine tasting. It is much more formal and we begin our tasting with a warm greeting and escorted to one of the many tables and offered a glass of their very lovely Geppetto NV Brut. Our wine waiter explains how we can choose from the selection of five themed flights, each consisting of five wines. You may wish to try the premium range as I did or the Italian or Spanish range for example.
Our host was fantastic, the service extremely professional, the new tasting room was beautiful and the wine tasting experience that Crittenden Estate was hoping achieve hit the mark……But I do have a couple of issues.
The wine list has always been expansive and this was always a great place to explore the many wines of Crittenden and choose your own journey with the help of a good cellar door assistant, instead of it now being limited to flights of wines.
It was pricey. $10 or $15 for the premium range refundable against any two bottles purchased. For this price I would want a little cheese and crackers or at the very least some grissini. I understand why they have made the change and I don’t mind the formal approach or even paying for a tasting, but at the moment it needs some fine tuning with regards to what you get and for how much.
Afterwards we dined at the classy restaurant with pretty views of willow trees surrounding the lake and had a wonderful meal. There are tables outside and we were impressed on all visits of how welcoming Stillwater has been to families and especially little ones. A great way to spend the afternoon!

My husband and I had a wonderful lunch at Stillwater there just recently. The sharing plate was delicious and such a beautiful view.

We were so well looked after in both the cellar door and restaurant. The cellar door has a great set up with table service and different flight options which makes it very relaxed and easy to keep track of the wines you are tasting. The Stillwater restaurant was equally impressive with great service and delicious food. Kids were not forgotten too with activity packs at both the cellar door & restaurant. Enough to keep any 4yo entertained.
Accommodation looked great too with a lovely outlook over the lake. Staff were setting up for a wedding as we were leaving. This would be a lovely location for an event with picturesque grounds teamed with charming accommodation.

The setting for this winery is something you expect to see in a glossy mag. The tasting room stylish and the system of having the choice of series of wine “flights” whereby you are not only given tasting notes but the waiter adds his/her comments as s/he pours the five glasses listed in each “flight” ( set out on a numbered paper place mat wine (so you don’t mix up the glasses) – well worth the $10 which is redeemable if you buy two bottles.
It would have been nice to have something like a small bread and cheese platter to go with it – but nothing too big – you don’t want to spoil your appetite before going into the excellent Stillwater Restaurant. The staff, under the supervision of maitre d’ James, offered excellent service.
The provision of activity books, children’s menu and the large lawned area and where children are free to play make this classy winery very family friendly.
