What a great all round experience De Bortoli offered at their winery. Many would know their wines, which can be found stacked on the shelves of some of the big liquor stores, but there is a lot more that you would never know existed unless you made a visit to their cellar door. The tasting room sits underneath the restaurant and has a nice long bar with wonderful staff who educate the punters as they come in. A separate area to one side is designated for any tour groups. This setup works well, as when a small tour group came in we didn’t feel swamped or overwhelmed, and as for the group, well they had their own private tasting. The cellar door manager really did her homework asking what styles of wine I liked and then directed me through a vast list of wines changing directions if needed by the feedback I gave her after each wine I tasted. (Big applause for taking the initiative and lifting the level of service) The cellar door had a smart provedore feel to it, which, was in no small part helped by the fact the there was a great cheese room to the rear of tasting bar.
Quality cheeses could be tasted for a small fee or a cheese platter could be made up and worked beautifully, by my side, as I did my wine tasting. The restaurant pays homage to the De Bortoli family’s Italian heritage, and though we did not eat at the restaurant, if the quality of the cheeses and service of its staff in the cellar door are anything to go on then the restaurant should also be of high standard.
Tip: get a cheese taste or platter first then take it with you while you go through the list of wines at De Bortoli.
