The cellar door was once an old homestead that has been restored and given a new lease of life. This grand space hosts many events and given it’s size the cellar door still is able to achieve a warm and inviting atmosphere. Things are done quite differently here at Curly Flat. Rather than have a single bar were punters gather to try the wines, elbowing each other for a bit of space, the owners have cleverly set up tasting stations around the room. You might grab a spot at the long communal table, or at one of the smaller tables scattered around the room or perhaps by the fireplace. Done this way in conjunction with Curly Flat not wanting to heavily promote their cellar door, keeps the number of visitors down and gives the feeling that you are getting a private tasting. All the attention is given to you and the owners can spend the right amount of time with you to discuss each of the wines. This winery specialises in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir all of excellent quality. Our tasting started with a superb Pinot Gris that was beautifully balanced and too good to spit out. We then sampled three different Chardonnay’s all evoking different characteristics. The Pinot’s were the same, each wine showing different characteristics and tastes. A picturesque dam surrounded by willow’s lies to the side of the homestead and a marvellous huge red brick building that houses the wine operation adds to the charm of this lovely place. Curly Flat rates up there with one of the best as a must see for the Macedon region.
