K1 by Geoff Hardy

The lush green tree lined drive does much to heighten the anticipation for the cellar door of K1 by Geoff Hardy. Once at the bottom, the narrow drive opens up to a clearing with a lake that mirrors the beautiful surrounds. The log cabin inspired cellar door sits on the opposing bank above the water and we can’t wait to get in and try some wine.
With a selection of about a dozen wines we decide to skip the vintage sparkling and start with a Grüner Veltliner. This Austrian white grape variety is perfect for those Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc drinkers who are looking for something different. This style is very unusual here in Australia and this is the only one I have seen or tasted that has been made here in Oz. Next we taste an Arneis, an Italian white wine that you see a little more of but still a rare style. We finish the whites with a gorgeous Chardonnay before pausing and taking in the lovely surrounds.
Inside, the tasting bar sits in the middle of the room for an informal approach to tasting. Outside a few tables sit on the deck above the water making it the most idyllic spot to enjoy a glass of one of K1’s wines while listening to the the birds in the nearby trees.
The Rosé gets the thumbs up from my mate and now it is time for the reds before finishing off with a very classy dessert wine.
K1 Has recently stopped serving food/regional platters, as they want the focus to be more on the wines. It’s a shame because with such lovely surrounds, a pétanque court across the lake from the cellar door, a regional produce platter would take the cellar door experience to the next level.
That said go visit K1 and be mesmerised.
