Kangarilla Road

Sometimes a wine touring schedule can be tight and a trip to Kangarilla Road only happened because we approached the turn off for the winery and thought why the hell not, even if it was for only ten minutes. I am so glad we did this because Kangarilla Road surpassed my expectations.
As you approach a petanque court is to the left of the cellar door. Once inside a large open space has a couple of couches, a long tasting bar and wine barrels stacked that hold some of the precious juice and imparting the oak flavours. Nice but nothing flash. What makes this place worth visiting was our wonderful host and the great list of wines with many eye opening moments.
The wines are divided into two groups, either the “Familiar Road”, the wines we have been drinking for decades (eg: Shiraz, Chardonnay) or the “Alternate Route”, the “newer” styles that Australian wine drinkers have been embracing more recently (Fiano, Primitivo and others). With a large list of wines we ask our host to pick some highlights. We begin with a very good Chardonnay that offers great value for money. While there are other white wines we decide to head straight to the reds beginning with the Primitivo and the “Terzetto” a blend of Italian red grape varieties that was stunning. Our host was fantastic, fun, down to earth and very knowledgeable not only on Kangarilla wines but of the McLaren Vale region. She suggested we finish our tasting with the five various Shiraz they have on offer so that we can taste the difference that come from winemaking techniques or the different parcel of grapes. A great time was had and lets be honest Kangarilla wines are not hard to find in bottle shops but here with the right cellar door manager you can discover another world of their wines that you never knew existed.
