You won’t find any airs and graces here at Lancaster. No architecturally designed winery or hand hewn timber facades. It’s all about vinification without the crystal decanter and silver-plated spittoon. In fact it’s refreshingly approachable. A rustic tin shed, bleached timbers, and rusted vintage machinery. Add to the mix the professional, friendly staff and it makes for a great day out.
On a warm, spring day three buses had stopped at Lancaster. However, the smiling staff took it in their stride, and the service never faltered. The wines were like the cellar door, no airs and graces, just good wholesome wine. The 9 Rows Cabernet was the highlight for me, but that is understandable, this being their flagship wine. What was the real surprise was the NV Sparkling. Lancaster has ditched the typical Chardonnay/Pinot Noir blend for a Chardonnay/Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Gordo Blanc blend. The result is a deliciously easy to drink style with some great citrus/tropical flavours to finish.
Great wine for me is not only about what’s in the bottle but also where you are and who you drink it with. One of my most memorable wines was a 1982 Dom Perignon drunk out of foam cups while lying in a park with some great friends. Limiting the large groups at Lancaster might create a more balanced environment between the smaller and larger groups but don’t let this put you off as there are too many positives that make this place great.
