Laurance is one of the many wineries located on Caves road. You turn into the driveway that does a long sweeping bend around a lake that has a gold statue of a lady that looks like she is about to dive off a large blue pole into the water below. On the far side of the lake is the cellar door and rose garden with manicured lawns.
Millions must have gone into the winery cellar door and the attention to detail is fantastic, from the chandeliers made from wine glasses to the toilets that are about the same size as many one bedroom apartments. The winery and its grounds are adorned with artwork and sculptures making for a picturesque spot.
Unfortunately this does not transfer to the tasting room. The service was impersonal and a fee is charged for a sample of six wines. The tasting fee is probably the highest in the region and although you received tasting notes on the wines you don’t get the opportunity to learn more about the wines and discuss the wines with any of the Laurance staff. The impression here is that the focus is not so much on their wine but rather the destination. Wine purists looking for that special wine and wanting to further their knowledge perhaps will go away disappointed.
On the other hand what Laurance does really well is to give you the opportunity to watch the world go by with a cold glass of wine or beer in your hand in beautiful surrounds. They cater really well for funky new mum and dads, as was testament to the number of new parents who sat on one of the many outside tables while their kids got to run around on the grass or play on the children’s playground while giving the parents some peace for at least one afternoon.
My advice would to skip the tasting and buy some beers, or if you still want try a wine, forgo the tasting and buy a bottle instead. Sit back enjoy life and perhaps order some food. A winery that is sure to be controversial but still worth a visit when travelling to Margaret River.
