Mandoon Estate

Mandoon Estate was one of the highlights of my trip and not just because it has it’s own brewery attached. (Although, to be perfectly honest, the signpost for the brewery was what made me do a sharp turnaround) Mandoon Estate has been around for a few years but recently someone made the smart decision to do a complete overhaul.
The result is a beautiful mix of restaurant, cellar door, beer garden, brewery, function room, arts centre and playground. It may sound like a lot, but the architecture successfully blends it all together into a smart, refined, relaxing space. I love to see businesses that do things smartly, and Mundoon hits the nail on the head.
The staff were welcoming, eager to explain their wares, and all around me people were just…. well, having a great time. With good intentions I sidled up to the wine tasting counter, but immediately I was eyeing off the beer taps at the other end. On a beautiful 24 degree spring day, the way the taps glistened with condensation was like a siren’s song and I had to excuse myself and shuffle down to the other end.
It’s nice to be served by someone who is excited by what they sell, and the young bearded chap enthusiastically explained the range of Homestead Brewery beers. Mmmmmm, beeeeer. The first brew I try is a Hefeweizen (wheat) beer. Others include a Belgian Pale Ale called “No1 Premier”, an American Pale Ale ‘Thunderbird” and a Black IPA called “Black Swan”. All were great, and I could happily pass the afternoon away with a bellyful of the Hefeweizen. A pear and an apple cider are also brewing as we speak.
Definitely highlight Mandoon Estate on your list of “must-do” especially if have little ones as the playground will keep the kids amused while you relax. I’d love to tell you about their wines, but you’ll need to find that out for yourself. Perhaps another day?
