We passed this winery twice and it was only because our previous visit to another cellar door that left us disappointed that we even bothered to give Michael Unwin Wines a chance. From the outside this cellar door has nothing going for it. It’s located on the main Highway in the tiny town of Beaufort. The cellar door is housed in a big white shed that sends out warning bells of “danger stay away and expect crappy wines”. Inside oak barrels line the walls giving a better vibe and at least the cellar door manager was friendly.
As we got into our tasting it became apparent that we had a bad case of judging the book by its cover. The young cellar door manager was not just friendly he was passionate and enthusiastic about his craft and everything about wine, and the wines were really good and some even fantastic.
Four different ranges of wine are available starting with the Black Hen reds that you can fill up in reusable bottles. They’re cheap but offer a great bang for your buck. About 15 wines are on tasting with some interesting styles including a Barbera, Sangiovese and a Durif. Our excellent guide took us through the range of wines and at the end took us out the back to try a barrel sample.
At Michael Unwin they know they have a problem of trying to get people to look past the ugly outside and to come in to see the true Cinderella that this place can be. Do yourself a favour and fight every urge to keep driving past this cellar door and come in and try some interesting wines and get a good overall experience that will surprise you.

Stopped in on the way to Halls Gap. A nice lady served us but the pouring on the wines we tasted was sooooo stingy you barely got to taste the wine and it let the experience down. I understand that giving away free wine costs $$ but we may have bought more if we could have properly tasted the wines we were unsure of. Was not a fan of the cheaper wines but tried a nice Viognier and a good Muscat.
