Mount Avoca

Mount Avoca is the second oldest vineyard in the district and was the perfect first stop for us having driven from Melbourne with a restless 4yr old. The winery is a very kid friendly cellar door with a playground and plenty of open space and picnic tables. While our boy got to stretch his legs and burn off some energy I went to the tasting counter, as I was restless for some wine.
With an extensive range of wines to sample at various prices Mount Avoca has everyone covered. I began my tasting with an elegant Fumé Blanc, which is a Sauvignon Blanc that Mount Avoca has put in oak barrels to add complexity and mouthfeel on the middle palate. The Estate Cabernet and Shiraz are wonderful wines but it’s the the Old Vine Shiraz and the Malakoff Shiraz that take things to a higher level. A log fire keeps the place cosy during winter and while you are here why not make the most of their BBQ facilities and have a pit stop for lunch. Finish up with one of their cheese platters and a bottle of their dessert wine to match then head for a game of Pétanque. Boule’s are available at the cellar door if you do not have your own. Bikes can also be rented from the cellar door as there is a bike track behind the property that takes you for about an 18km loop into the bush.
If you happen to be dragging the kids around visiting cellar doors in the region then do everyone in the family a favour and have a nice long pit stop at Mount Avoca. Great wines, extensive list and something here for all members of the family.
