One of the largest wine companies in Australia and home to many iconic Australian wines including the Bin 707, St Henri and of course Grange.
From the outside the building lacks charm or the cool factor, but once inside chilled out tunes help funk things up. Penfolds has the largest list of wines I have seen but wisely limited their tasting range to something more manageable for the wine tourist. The staff were friendly and answered all our questions. Apart from the tasting list several other wines were made available for tasting and I think these would rotate. We tasted many of the well known Penfold wines, but it was the unusual varieties that you don’t see very often that really excited me, such as the very classy Sangiovese or the Mataro. There is also the option to taste some of Penfolds top shelf wines for a fee. The cost varies depending on which wine you choose. The cost of trying Grange is more than some of the other wines, but wouldn’t it be great to say you have tasted it without the expense of buying a whole bottle!
In the centre of the cellar door there is also a fridge that carries a small range of produce to build a picnic hamper or have something for later.
