It’s all about the Italian styles at Pizzini and the range of grape varieties was astounding. The great thing at this winery is that even if you have dabbled in some Italian grape varieties before you are sure to discover something new.
We were greeted with a friendly smile and several of the Pizzini family were manning the cellar door, while Katrina Pizzini had a small group in the cooking school kitchen.
Our host was fantastic, explaining all the Italian wines and the characteristics to look for. During our tasting we had a changing of the guard and were fortunate enough to have the head of the family and former winemaker Alfredo take us through the remainder of the wines.
Throughout the tasting Alfredo poured us a couple of wines that had about 10 years of age on them so we could see the difference some time would make to the taste of the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. These wines aged beautifully, adding complexity to what were already tasty wines when young.
Some highlights of our tasting were the Prosecco and the white wines Verdiccchio and Verduzzo. We tried two unusual reds in a Canaiolo and an IL Barone of which I had never heard of before but both were excellent. If there was a grape variety that Pizzini specialises in it would have to be Sangiovese and it comes in various styles either blended with other grape varieties, on it’s own or made into a Rosé style.
Pizzini was a fabulous day out with wonderful Italian style wines and warm friendly knowledgeable service where we gained much insight into the Italian grape varieties including the more unusual wines.
I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend a visit to Pizzini. La dolce vita!

It was only mid morning when we arrived at Pizzini and a group of cooking class attendees were picking up there efforts from the night before (hand made pasta etc). we were warmly greeted and shone through an extensive flight of fantastic wines then after chatting with the wine maker for a while he pulled out a 15+ year old bottle of Nebbiolo to taste. WOW!!
I bought some but have to wait a considerable time to drink
