Sandalford was the first vineyard in Western Australia and today it is one of the true juggernauts of the area. A sprawling estate, that speaks of class and elegance, from the limos outside the cellar door to the big-name musicians they host at vineyard concerts.
The vineyard is obviously used to dealing with large groups of people, having a plethora of function rooms on offer, not only catering to weddings and social events but also the corporate sector, with is very own media theatrette.
The main tasting room is set in the gift shop and offers plenty of floor space to taste, mingle and sip, with an additional alfresco tasting area. Wines are displayed in a bottle shop format, and surrounded by aisles of local crafts and trinkets, mostly wine-related.
Behind the long counter stand a bevy of well-dressed staff waiting to tempt your palates and get you started onto the serious business of tasting wine. If you can’t find a wine here that you like I would be looking to retire your taste buds.
For such a large commercial winery there is still a lot of passion here and that definitely comes across in their wines. My pick was the Sandalford Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, but I could have easily um’ed and ah’ed my way back and forth for that top spot as they were all consistently good. Sandalford does attract some large crowds, with ample room for bus parking so be mindful of picking a time to visit if you don’t like crowds.
