This winery was a bit of bugger to find on the tourist maps that they hand out everywhere, but so simple and close to the township of Rutherglen when you know where it is. If you have the same problem don’t give up and move on to the next winery in the region or you will miss a real gem. The cellar door is hidden behind the hill as you enter the driveway. Although only small it has a nice contemporary feel about it and country hospitality reigns supreme here.
We sat down to try some of the favourites of Rutherglen and some wines that had an interesting modern twist to them. We started with “The Fleur” which is a white wine made from Orange Muscat grapes with touches of floral and blossoms and when served chilled it makes for something quite unique. Throughout our tasting we were given a little rosemary grissini, then later an olive and a wafer of dark chocolate, all of very high quality. The chocolate was to be matched, not with your typical Durif but rather an excellent sweet dessert style Durif, Fantastic! There are about 10 wines to sample and you will find some interesting takes on some old styles. Not interesting in a bad way but more like a top chef pushing the boundaries on some classic dishes and getting rave reviews. A tasting fee applies but is more than worth it and is refundable against any wine purchase.

Scion are a small, family run vineyard with a quirky cellar door. They offer a small selection of boutique wines which are obviously passionately made but winemaker and his family. When we visited it wasnt busy and enjoyed the personal attention.

Staff at this cellar door were fantastic. The little ‘bites’ that went with the tasting were a nice and unique touch.
