As the sun was setting this was the last winery for the day, and I was almost tempted to drive past it. Was it really going to offer me anything special? My palate was already rebelling at the thought of one more mouthful of wine, but the fact that it was down a quiet little street piqued my interest. A welcoming alfresco area led to a small tasting room adorned with some barrels and furniture, but it was the peacefulness of Talijancich (pronounced tally-anne-sich) that really grabbed me.

After a day of crowds at some of the other venues, the stillness was like an elixir. It was a joy to actually listen to the lady as she explained the wines, and the playful banter between the staff was really infectious. While I was reluctant to put my palate through further punishment, I spied a display of unusual bottles that screamed out that these were something special.  When I read “Pedro Ximénez” scrolled across the label and I would have sold my soul for a taste. If you haven’t had Pedro Ximénez before, imagined the God gave you a glass of his best wine, you fortified it and bottled it. That is Pedro. It has the most luscious and unctuous mouth feel, a long lingering essence of coffee, chocolate, licorice. One of my favourite things! I’ve had Talijancich wines before in restaurants, and I can guarantee they’re good. But this stop today, here and now, raised me to new heights. White fortifieds, red fortifieds, Pedro blends, Vintage Port, I tried them all. And the bulging bag I walked out with will attest to how much I liked them. My favourite was the Pedro Ximénez 1974 Rare Pedro, and this will take pride of place in my bar. A blend of vintages from back to 1974, it was special, truly special. But I also loved that I got to talk to people who truly cared about what they were doing, in a peaceful, relaxing venue, with genuine laughter and funny stories. What a great way to end the day.

We almost didn’t stop here because none of us in the car could pronounce the name! So glad we persisted! Their wines, especially the fortifieds are beyond delicious. Really friendly service too!
