Some wineries have wonderful surrounds and views, some beautifully architecturally designed cellar doors, while others offer unusual grape varieties to taste that are mind blowing. Here at Yangarra their ace up the sleeve is our host and their cellar door manager, Genevieve. She took what could have been a good wine tasting experience to something that was out of this world.
Inside we jump at the chance to sit on the couches and begin our relaxed wine tasting. There are two white wines, a Roussanne followed by a Viognier before we move onto the red wines.
The Estate Shiraz is classy and smooth. The next wine in our crosshairs is the GSM followed by a straight Grenache that had our votes.
Our host has an amazing knowledge but does not preach to you about the virtues of wine, rather she talks about each of the wines as they are poured giving a simple explanations to what happens in the vineyard or in the winemaking process that affects the characteristics in the wine and what the winemaker was hoping to achieve.
Case in point, the coffee table we sit at (underneath the glass table top) has various Yangarra wines in the bottle that come from different plots of the vineyard. Beneath them are soil samples from where the vines are grown. It is here our host explains how the different soils impact on the wine and we can see exactly what she was talking about.
With just under ten wines on tasting we imagined only being here a short while but we were so captivated by the passion and the willingness of our wonderful host to share her knowledge that she had gained over the years with others that we were like party guests that did not want to leave.
Go visit Yangarra for its great certified biodynamic wines and if you have a passion for learning about wine. Also visit if you are just learning about wine and wish to know more but feel uneasy due to a lack of experience as I guarantee if you show interest and ask some questions then the winner of the best cellar door person of 2013 in McLaren Vale, Yangarra’s Genevieve, will make you feel at ease, relaxed and you will leave having tasted some wonderful wines and begin to understand a whole lot more in the world of wine than when you first walked in.
